Coach Expectations for Parents and Players
PLAYER EXPECTATIONS
Coaches expect 100% effort and focus:
- Full attention is required while at practice; Socializing can be done prior to practice, limited during water breaks, and after practice
-
When coaches are talking/teaching, players need to be listening
-
-
All players need to be responsible for their gear.
-
Do not leave any trash on the field or sidelines after practices or games. Pick up trash, even if it doesn’t belong to you.
-
The full lacrosse field is BIG, being well-conditioned to run at full speed and have endurance is important!
SPORTSMANSHIP
-
Be a good teammate.
-
Support your fellow teammates on and off the field.
-
Celebrate your teammate's success.
-
Help your teammates learn from mistakes in a positive way.
-
Verbal or physical bullying will not be tolerated and could result in removal from the team. If this is identified, please report it to your player’s coach and/or Program Director.
ATTENDANCE
A team is composed of every player. So, to practice as a team we all need to commit to being at every practice. Practice plans and game plans are made in advance. Missing players can dramatically impact the rest of the team. In the rare instance that your player cannot attend a practice or game, please COMMUNICATE this information to your coach with as much notice as possible. Additionally:
-
Players must arrive on time and ready to practice.
-
Arrive early to your game. If a game is scheduled for 10 am, this means the game starts at 10 am. Coaches will instruct players when they want the players to arrive. Pre-game warm-ups and talks are important for the games themselves.
PLAYING TIME
Coaches will try to keep game playing time evenly distributed among all players on all Classic Teams. Player positions will greatly impact playing time. For example, goalies may play 100% of the game while midfielders may play approximately 30% of the game (due to running the entire field and having multiple midfield lines). Attack and defensive players should be played more evenly but can still vary based on items below:
-
Game situations (man up/man down, penalties, possession time/substitution possibilities, injuries, position, etc.)
-
Practice attendance.
-
Discipline/Attitude issues.
-
Sideline behavior.
SIDELINE ETIQUETTE
-
Support your players to the fullest extent possible with positive encouragement.
-
Refrain from coaching your player from the sideline (i.e. giving instructions, directions, etc.) – LET THE COACHES COACH.
-
Never criticize the referees.
-
Never criticize another player (our team or the opposing team).
-
Never engage negatively with parents from the opposing team.
-
Clean the sidelines after each practice/game (Both parents and players).
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
We are always looking for new volunteers! The growth of our program depends on increasing the number of coaches and assistants we have in our system. We want your help even if you don’t know anything about lacrosse, we will teach you! There are several ways you can help on or off the field:.
-
Strongly encourage your players to pick up their stick on days with no practice. Even 10 minutes a day spent on cradling (both hands), playing catch (using both hands), wall ball, etc. makes a tremendous difference!
-
There are a multitude of ways to experience lacrosse outside of playing. There are quality high school and college programs in the area. There are often college and professional lacrosse games on TV and available on the web. The web contains 1000s of highlight clips and tutorials for players interested in lacrosse.
Assist your coaches. If you want to learn more, get more involved with coaching, or simply find a way to spend more time with your players outside of your home, please ask one of the coaches how you can help out, or email framinghamyouthlacrosse@gmail.com.
